Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has forged a strategic partnership with Brookfield to establish a solar energy park with a capacity of 45 MW in Rajasthan, marking a significant move towards achieving its net-zero goals, the company said in a press release.
Approved by HUL's Board of Directors, the equity investment, up to 27.73 percent (32.24 percent, including wholly owned subsidiaries), will be made in Transition Sustainable Energy Services One Private Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed by Brookfield, a global alternative asset manager.
The solar project will be developed at the site of Brookfield’s solar park, part of the Brookfield Global Transition Fund. Aligned with India's commitment in COP26 to reach 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030, the initiative will utilize group captive models for renewable energy procurement.
“We are excited to form this unique partnership wherein we will be supplying green energy at scale to HUL and its suppliers from a single location in Bikaner which is a part of our larger 550 MW solar park. This park is dedicated to accelerating the decarbonization goals of both government and businesses in India,” said Nawal Saini, Managing Director, Renewable Power & Transition, Brookfield.
HUL aims to achieve Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction in line with its commitment to zero emissions in operations by 2030. Additionally, the company is committed to achieving net-zero emissions for all its products, from sourcing to the point of sale, by 2039. The collaboration addresses the challenge of non-green energy consumption in HUL’s manufacturing units and can potentially extend to strategic suppliers in subsequent phases.
"The proposed green energy partnership is a step in the right direction. I am sure this will pave the way for more such transformative partnerships that align with environmental and economic sustainability and will help stakeholders across the value chain,” said Rohit Jawa, CEO and MD of HUL.
