    Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has announced the appointment of Tarun Bajaj as an Independent Director on its Board, effective December 1, 2023, for a five-year term. Mr. Bajaj, aged 61, brings a wealth of experience, having served in the Indian Administrative Service since 1988, belonging to the Haryana Cadre.

    Before retiring in November 2022, Mr. Bajaj held the position of Revenue Secretary, Government of India. In this role, he played a pivotal part in stabilizing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and significantly increasing revenue collections under GST and Income Tax. His efforts included upgrading technology in the administration of both direct and indirect taxes, contributing to enhanced transparency and efficiency.

    “Tarun has an innate knowledge of the country’s economic policies and has been responsible for shaping key fiscal initiatives of the Government of India. His vast experience in administration, management and public policy, will undoubtedly be beneficial to HUL,” said Nitin Paranjpe, Non-Executive Chairman, HUL.

    During his tenure as the Economic Affairs Secretary, Mr. Bajaj played a critical role in formulating the government's economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This involved overseeing the rollout of various relief measures and economic stimulus packages.

    Beyond his roles in economic governance, Mr. Bajaj chaired the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and served as a Director on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India and the Board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). He also held positions as the Governor of India for the International Fund for Agriculture Development and as Alternate Governor of India for the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and New Development Bank.
