German manufacturer Mercedes has going full-tilt with new electric vehicles for a long time now. One of their flagship vehicles, however, was yet to receive electrification and this will be happening soon, too. At the upcoming Bharat Mobility Global Expo, Mercedes is all set to debut the EQG concept, an electric SUV based on the G-Class. Mercedes will also be showcasing the AMG GLE 53 as well as the GLA SUV on their stand.

We first saw the EQG in action at the Munich Motor Show last year. Based on the Mercedes’s most expensive offroader, the G-Class it gets a lot of visually similar features. On closer inspection, however, the EQG has been styled in accordance with Mercedes’s EQ design language. At the front, you have the closed off front grille complete with the 3D star pattern that is also seen on the EQS and surrounded by an LED strip. Bumpers on both, the front and the rear, too have been tweaked as well. Over on the side, you see a set of 22-inch aluminium wheels exclusive to the EQG. The spare wheel at the rear has been replaced with a storage box. The EQG’s roof-rack also features a light bar highlighting its offroader essence. Unlike the other EQ models, however, the EQG misses out on a front trunk (frunk).

Mercedes hasn’t given a lot of information when it comes to the powertrain. For the moment, what we do know is that the EQG will get a quad motor setup, all of them individually controllable. There is also a two-speed gearbox that allows for switching between low-range and high-range gearing. Like its ICE counterpart, the EQG is built on a ladder frame chassis.

Mercedes has managed to integrate the battery pack into the frame allowing for an extremely low centre of gravity and again, while there is no solid information, we expect the SUV to be able to drive for up to 500 km on a single charge.

The EQG’s piece de resistance, though, is something called a G-Turn. Thanks to the four individual motors mounted to the wheels, the EQG is capable making a 360-degree tank turn on the spot. This is possible by activating a button on the dashboard which turns the wheels on side of the car in two opposite directions. The driver can choose which direction to turn the SUV in by using the paddleshifters behind the steering wheel.

The SUV will also be coming to Indian shores by the end of the year along with a lineup of other new models from the Mercedes stables. For now, you can check out the EQG concept at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo being held in Delhi from February 1 to 3.
