For generations, we’ve heard that love is blind — and Bollywood, real-life romances and sweeping stories have reinforced the idea that age, height or background shouldn’t matter when two people fall for each other.
But beneath that romantic ideal sits a quieter curiosity many people carry: do age gaps actually affect how relationships unfold? And is there a sweet spot for relationship success? A 2018 study may have answers.
Researchers from the Journal of Population Economics analysed data from more than 3,000 Australian couples tracked over several years through the HILDA (Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia) survey.
Their goal is to understand whether age differences between partners influence long-term relationship satisfaction.
The findings were eye-opening.
Researchers observed that relationship satisfaction tends to decline as the age gap widens.
Couples with a zero to three-year age difference reported the most stable, long-lasting satisfaction — particularly in the first decade of marriage.
Why this range? Experts point to overlapping life experiences.
In contrast, larger gaps tend to create pressure points through differences in timelines, social circles, and expectations around kids, money, and retirement.
In studies, couples with wider age gaps (especially over 7 years) have seen a greater decline in satisfaction over 6 to 10 years of marriage
Some trends have been noted:
Yet, these trends should not be seen as universal indicators.
Data may show trends, but life is often atypical.
India has many culturally important couples with significant age differences, such as Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu, and Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas.
Age may shape experiences, but it doesn’t dictate compatibility.
