The optimal time to address waterproofing is during the construction phase of your home. At this early stage, integrating waterproofing measures ensures that they are seamlessly incorporated into the building process, providing comprehensive protection from the start. Engaging a professional team with expertise in waterproofing is crucial for selecting and applying the most suitable materials and techniques for your specific needs. This proactive approach helps prevent future water damage and avoids costly repairs.

Fixing the root cause:

For older properties facing seepage issues, it is important to avoid undertaking any waterproofing repairs during the rainy season. The presence of excess moisture can interfere with the application and curing of waterproofing materials, potentially leading to ineffective results, cautions Leila Erfan, founder of ARIA Interior Designs. She recommends, “Instead, wait for a dry period to ensure optimal conditions for the repair work. When addressing seepage in older homes and buildings, prioritise the use of high-quality, genuine waterproofing products to keep the problems at bay. These products are designed to offer superior protection and durability, helping to address existing problems and prevent future issues. Additionally, hiring a reputable contractor with a track record of successful waterproofing projects ensures that the repair work is performed to the highest standards. By focusing on these key factors—timing, material quality, and professional expertise—you can effectively safeguard your home against water damage, preserve its structural integrity, and enhance its longevity.”

Re-style your home for the monsoon:

During the rainy season, it is time to adapt your home’s interior to accommodate the unique challenges and opportunities that come with the rainy weather. This season is perfect for refreshing your living space and ensuring it remains stylish, comfortable, and practical. Erfan says, “Woollen carpets, while luxurious, are highly susceptible to moisture. During the monsoon, they can absorb excess humidity, leading to potential mold and mildew growth. To prevent this, roll up your woolen carpets and store them in a dry, well-ventilated area. Instead, opt for washable or synthetic rugs that can withstand the damp conditions and are easier to maintain. The monsoon season calls for a shift in your soft furnishings. Replace printed cushions and polyester fabrics with those made from cotton and organic materials. Cotton is a breathable fabric that dries quickly, making it ideal for humid weather. Organic fabrics not only offer comfort but also contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly home environment. Avoid silver and other metal artifacts that are prone to oxidation and tarnishing when exposed to high humidity. To maintain the aesthetic appeal of your décor, consider removing metal items and replacing them with alternatives made from ceramics, glass, or wood. These materials are less affected by moisture and can help maintain a polished look in your home.”

For a more practical approach during the monsoon, avoid layering coffee table books and excessive accessories. A cluttered table can collect dust and moisture, detracting from its visual appeal. Instead, keep your coffee table neat and organized with minimal, functional décor. Opt for a few carefully selected items that enhance the table’s appearance while making it easier to maintain. Erfan adds, “It’s advisable to ventilate your home daily to maintain a healthy indoor environment. During the monsoon season, it’s particularly important to minimise the use of room fresheners and incense, as these can exacerbate indoor air quality issues and trap moisture. Instead, make a habit of opening your windows to let fresh air circulate and help reduce humidity levels. For larger homes, investing in a dehumidifier can be especially effective in controlling excess moisture, which helps prevent mold growth and mildew. Additionally, consider using moisture-absorbing materials like silica gel or activated charcoal in areas prone to dampness, and ensure that your home’s gutters and downspouts are clear to prevent water buildup.”
