Roma Riaz who will be representing Pakistan at Miss Universe 2025 pageant in Thailand has recently posted a video, slamming all her trollers for telling her that she doesn't look Pakistani enough. While launching her rebuttal, what is unmissable is how Riaz does it with so much poise and dignity.
Riaz has been at the receiving end of a lot of derogatory comments. From being told that she's fat to hearing comments about her dark skin, the model's spirit has not shattered. It is because she's so confident in her skin and proud of how she looks, she said in the clip that she will not apologise for looking like her people. It is blatant that a lot of people continue to think that fair skin is equal to looking beautiful.
“I am Pakistani in my roots, in my values, and in every shade of my skin,” she said. “My skin is the same colour as the women who built our homes, our families, and carried our nation in their hearts," she added quite confidently.
Riaz also went to highlight that she proudly represents a generation of South Asian women who don't fit into the narrow boxes of what society thinks how women should look like.
Take a look at the clip:
One thing is clear that Riaz is not fazed by the comments per se, but the fact that why her own people in Pakistan would diss her. A couple of seconds into the video, Riaz switched to Urdu and urged people to not sabotage the image she's trying to build. "Everyone is entitles to their opinion, but if you don’t have anything nice to say, please, for the sake of Pakistan’s reputation, don’t say anything.”
Come to think of it, it is plain sad that the same girl, who's telling people on global platforms how beautiful her country is, has to deal with derogatory comments about her looks.
For centuries, fairer skin is deemed as more superior. Women across the board, no matter how much they have achieved in life, have always been judged on their colour of skin. It is also true that women of colour have been discriminated against in different areas of life.
