Do you admire celebrities for their effortlessly stylish looks? Fine strands of gold and silver drape elegantly, catching the light with every movement. A delicate choker sits at the base of the neck, leading to a longer pendant. Slender bangles jingle softly against a bold cuff. Fingers adorned with dainty and chunky rings add a touch of whimsy.
Layering jewellery is a trend that's taken the fashion world by storm, from college campuses to high-fashion runways and across social media feeds. It's a fresh and exciting way to elevate your style and express your personal flair.
The beauty of layering lies in its versatility, says Aditi Khandelwal, Co-founder, Kicky and Perky, a Jaipur-based jewellery brand. “ Whether you're drawn to delicate, handcrafted pieces or bold statement jewellery, the possibilities for mixing and matching are endless. It is always fun to experiment with different combinations of necklaces, bracelets, and rings, to create a unique look that's distinctly your own.” She adds.
Khandelwal suggests these 8 tips to master the art of layering for a standout look:
Start with a focal point: Begin by selecting a statement piece as your anchor. This could be a handcrafted pendant necklace with a stunning moissanite centerpiece or a sterling silver locket. Build your layers around this piece, ensuring it remains the star of your ensemble.
Mix metals with confidence: Combine different metal tones like rhodium-plated white gold with yellow or rose gold. The key is to create a balanced look by evenly distributing the different metals throughout your layers.
Play with lengths and textures: Vary the lengths of your necklaces to create depth and interest. Pair a choker with a mid-length chain and a long pendant for a visually appealing cascade effect. Add different textures, such as smooth polished surfaces alongside more intricate, textured designs.
Try convertible jewellery: Invest in versatile, convertible pieces that can adapt to different styles. A necklace that transforms into a bracelet or earrings that can be worn multiple ways offers endless layering possibilities and value for money.
Opt for colourful gemstones: Add pops of colour with precious and semi-precious stones. A delicate ruby pendant can add a touch of passion, while iolite brings a calming blue hue. Mix these coloured gems with neutral pieces for a balanced and sophisticated appearance.
Balance delicate and bold: Combine fine, delicate chains with chunkier pieces for a well-rounded look. A dainty silver bracelet can beautifully offset a statement cuff, creating an intriguing contrast that draws the eye.
Consider your neckline: Your clothing neckline should complement your layered jewellery. V-necks work well with pendants of varying lengths, while turtlenecks provide a clean backdrop for shorter, layered necklaces or statement earrings.
Of earrings and rings: Layering isn't just for necklaces. Stack rings of different widths and styles on one or multiple fingers. For earrings, try combining studs with small hoops or ear cuffs for a modern, layered ear look.
