Splurging money online isn’t just about festivals or celebrations, it happens every day. From early morning deals to late‑night flash sales, the modern shopper never really stops. With so many platforms vying for your attention, it’s easy to get lured by eye‑catching offers. However, it is important to stay vigilant, because lurking behind the convenience of online shopping are scammers ready to exploit trust and make a quick profit.

The tactics of fraudsters evolve just as fast. Fake websites, impersonated sellers, bogus apps and misleading ads can make even experienced shoppers vulnerable. “The fraud could range from accessing your wallet balance, stealing or using your card credentials and mis‑using your identity on other e‑commerce portals,” Amit Relan, co-founder, CEO, mFilterIt, tells Moneycontrol.

It’s not just consumers who need to be careful; brands also play a crucial role. “They must ensure their platforms are secure, offers are genuine, and unauthorised sellers or fake listings are removed promptly,” Relan says and highlights that many scam networks now exploit everyday online shopping, targeting both buyers and businesses with sophisticated digital tricks.

How to be safe when shopping online

Relan shared tips on how both sides can build a safer online shopping environment:

Stay vigilant against fake websites and apps: Only download apps from official stores; brands must monitor and shut down impersonators.

Beware of misleading ads and offers: If a deal seems too good to be true, question it; brands should clearly communicate authentic discounts.

Check seller credibility: Buyers should review marketplace ratings; brands must on‑board only verified merchants.

Spot fake reviews and ratings: Look for detailed, genuine feedback; brands should use tools to detect and remove fraudulent reviews.

Be cautious with coupons and discounts: Use offers only from official brand channels; brands must secure coupon distribution to prevent misuse.
