During the rainy season your hair may get frizzy, your skin feels sticky, and you might notice more pimples than usual. The increased humidity can make your hair frizzy and your skin feel constantly sticky.
Humidity clogs pores and increases oil production, which can cause breakouts, even in people who don’t usually get acne, says Dolly Shah, Clinical Cosmetologist and a Skincare Creator. “Dry skin isn’t spared either. Moving between humid weather and air-conditioned rooms dries out the skin, making it flaky and irritated. In short, your regular skincare may not work during this season,” says Shah.
The drop in sunlight during rainy days lowers serotonin levels, which can affect mood and energy. “Many people mistake this for laziness, but it’s often mild seasonal depression,” tells Shah. “Feeling low, tired, or craving heavy food is common,”
Shah suggests simple daily changes that can help lift your mood and improve monsoon wellness:
When oily skin gets oilier: Swap heavy creams for oil-free, gel-based moisturisers. A salicylic acid face wash helps unclog pores, while niacinamide and zinc PCA calm excess shine without causing dryness.
When dry skin flakes more than usual: Barrier repair is the name of the game. Use moisturisers rich in ceramides and squalane, and layer them over hydrating toners. Supplements like omega-3s can help moisturise from within.
Fungal infections: Wet shoes and sticky inner thighs? A fungal paradise. Dust antifungal powders on sweat-prone areas and switch to loose, airy fabrics. "Even socks matter, change them if they feel even slightly damp," Dolly advises.
Feeling heavy: Even on cloudy days, try getting 15 minutes of light exposure by a window. “Pair it with gentle stretches or yoga to boost natural endorphins,” suggests Dolly. A pinch of Himalayan salt in your morning water can stabilise your energy levels too.
Cravings and comfort eating: Instead of cutting off the cravings, tweak them. Reach for bananas, dark chocolate, or walnuts to support mood. "Herbal teas like tulsi and ginger not only uplift but help digestion too," she adds.
Tips for skin wellness:
For oily, acne-prone skin: Use salicylic acid cleansers, zinc PCA, and niacinamide.
For dry, flaky skin: Go for ceramide-rich moisturisers, omega-3 supplements, and hydrating toners.
To prevent fungal infections: Apply antifungal powder, wear breathable clothing, and keep your feet dry.
For low mood and energy: Get some natural light, do light exercises, and add a pinch of Himalayan salt to your water.
To manage cravings and emotional dips: Sip on herbal teas, choose mood-supporting snacks, and try journaling or vitamin D3 supplements. Consult your doctor.
