There is something deeply comforting about winter gatherings at home, especially when they blend festive cheer with Indian warmth. This season, house parties are moving away from cluttered décor and complicated menus, and towards thoughtfully curated themes where food, music, and ambience work in quiet harmony.

Indian décor with a festive twist

Lean into Indian textures and materials to make the setting feel rooted yet contemporary. Handwoven table mats, block-printed fabrics, cane furniture, and ceramic serveware bring depth to your décor. Vintage brass bowls filled with floating candles, rose petals, or citrus slices can double up as centrepieces. For Christmas and New Year, subtle festive touches work best and elements like gold accents, glass votives, metallic trays, and a few understated ornaments mix well into your existing décor.

Elevate the food experience

Food is the heart of any Indian gathering, and presentation makes all the difference. Chef Rovin Dhar, the Director of Culinary at Cafe Breeze, Ahuja Residences, says, “Even simple Indian dishes can look luxurious with clever presentation. Use brass thalis, copper bowls, banana leaves, wooden boards, mini clay pots, or marble slabs. Garnish with fresh coriander, mint, pomegranate, fried curry leaves, edible flowers, or citrus slices. Keep food in neat sections, build height using stands, and don’t overcrowd platters. For drinks, use kullhads, copper glasses, or crystal tumblers; rim with chilli-salt, rose sugar, or cinnamon sugar for a festive touch. Serve a signature winter drink like kesar badam thandai, warm mulled wine, masala rum punch, or cranberry–kala khatta spritz.”

Keep the menu winter-appropriate and crowd-friendly like kebabs, mini kachoris, slow-cooked dals, biryanis, and rich vegetarian curries paired with artisanal breads or rice.

Set the mood with a rich winter palette

A good winter party in India should feel intimate, warm, and celebratory. Begin by choosing a colour story and let it flow through your space. Jewel tones such as maroon, emerald, royal blue, and antique gold work beautifully for Christmas and New Year gatherings. Use these shades across table runners, cushions, candles, napkins, and even your floral arrangements.

Brass candle stands, hurricane lanterns, and soft fairy lights instantly add warmth. Instead of harsh overhead lighting, opt for floor lamps and candle clusters to create a relaxed, elegant glow. Music subtly shapes the energy of your evening. Start with soft Sufi, Indian classical, or unplugged Bollywood as guests arrive. As the night progresses, transition into upbeat lounge music or Hindi retro favourites for cocktails and conversations.

No last-minute kitchen panic

A memorable party isn’t about doing everything at the last minute but being prepared. The final half hour before guests arrive should be reserved for lighting candles, setting the music, and enjoying a welcome drink yourself. Chef Rovin Dhar mentions, “To be free 30 minutes before guests arrive, finish all chopping, frying, and tempering earlier in the day. Pre-plate snacks like kebabs or chaats and keep them ready to heat. Make gravies and biryanis ahead, just warm before serving. Batch your cocktails or mocktails, cut all citrus and herbs, and set the entire bar counter in advance. Set the dining table fully with plates, candles, flowers, and serving spoons.” Layer it with natural winter elements like cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, eucalyptus sprigs, pinecones, and flowers for a fragrant ambiance and stunning table spread.
