Holi, the festival of colours, is a time of joy, laughter, and togetherness. For children, it is an especially exciting occasion, filled with splashes of vibrant hues, water balloons, and playful fun. However, while the festival brings immense happiness, it also comes with certain risks, especially for young children. Ensuring their safety is crucial to making Holi a memorable and accident-free celebration.
Dr Tushar Tayal, Consultant, Internal Medicine at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, emphasises that while Holi is meant to be an enjoyable festival, parents must take precautions to protect children from potential health hazards. From choosing the right colours to ensuring safe play environments, here are some important dos and don’ts to follow.
Dos: Keep Holi fun and safe for kids
One of the most important aspects of celebrating Holi safely is using natural, herbal, or organic colours. Chemical-based synthetic colours often contain toxic substances that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, particularly in children with sensitive skin. Parents should opt for eco-friendly, non-toxic colours to prevent any harmful effects.
Before stepping out to play, applying a generous amount of coconut oil or moisturizer on a child’s skin and hair can create a protective barrier. This helps prevent color from seeping into the skin and makes it easier to wash off later. Dressing children in full-sleeved clothing and long pants is another effective way to minimize direct contact with colours and protect against sun exposure. Additionally, providing protective goggles can help safeguard their eyes from accidental color splashes.
Since Holi celebrations often take place outdoors under the sun, hydration is key. Playing in the heat can lead to dehydration, so it is essential to keep an adequate supply of drinking water on hand. Encouraging kids to take breaks and drink water at regular intervals will help them stay refreshed and active.
Supervision is critical when children are playing Holi. Parents and guardians should keep a close eye on them to ensure they are engaging in safe play. Teaching kids to apply colours gently and avoid throwing powders or liquids directly at someone’s face can prevent accidents and promote a more respectful and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Don’ts: Avoid common Holi hazards
While colours are the heart of Holi, not all colours are safe. Parents should strictly avoid chemical-based dyes, as they can contain harmful toxins that may lead to rashes, eye irritation, or even more serious health issues in children.
Water play is another area that requires caution. Water balloons and high-powered water pistols can cause physical harm, particularly to the eyes and face. Children should be discouraged from using these as they can lead to unexpected injuries.
Forcing children to participate in Holi when they are uncomfortable should also be avoided. Every child has a different level of comfort with colours and water play, and it is important to respect their boundaries. Allowing them to celebrate at their own pace ensures that they enjoy the festival without feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
Slippery surfaces pose a significant risk during Holi. Wet floors and water-soaked areas can lead to falls and injuries. Parents should ensure that children play in safe, dry areas and avoid running on wet surfaces.
Another potential health risk comes from inhaling dry color powders. When large amounts of powder are thrown around, fine particles can be inhaled, leading to respiratory issues, especially for children who have asthma or allergies. Parents should advise kids to keep colours away from their noses and mouths and avoid throwing powder directly into the air.
Finally, children should never be left unattended, especially near water sources such as tubs, tanks, or large crowds. Accidental slips, falls, or drowning incidents can occur if proper supervision is not maintained. Keeping an eye on children at all times ensures a safe and secure Holi experience.
