Choosing a perfume begins with understanding how and when you’ll wear it. Lighter, fresher fragrances with citrus, aquatic, or green notes are ideal for everyday urban use. They sit closer to the skin, feel breathable, and work well in professional or social daytime settings. Deeper, more complex compositions like woody, amber, spicy, or musky are better reserved for evenings, celebrations, or occasions that call for a stronger presence.
In countries like India, climate plays a crucial role. Heat and humidity amplify scent, which means a perfume can smell very different in the bottle versus on skin. This is why testing on skin and observing the dry-down (the scent that remains after 30–60 minutes) is essential. Skin chemistry, sweat levels, and even diet can influence how a fragrance performs, making blind buying risky. The right fragrance is no longer just an accessory; it’s a personal signature shaped by routine, mood, and environment.

Fragrance is now firmly part of the wellness conversation. The way consumers choose fragrances today has quietly but decisively shifted. Studies show that scent is directly linked to memory and emotional processing, which explains why certain smells instantly uplift, calm, or ground us.
Consumers are increasingly using perfumes as daily rituals much like skincare or meditation, to support confidence, focus, and emotional balance. Kanishka Jain, Director at Incredible Indriya, explains, “Uplifting blends can enhance energy and focus, while softer aquatic-floral profiles are often chosen for moments of calm and reset. Fresh, citrus-aqua compositions suit daily wear, while richer profiles feel more expressive for evenings and special moments. Citrus and fresh notes tend to feel energising, soft florals and herbal compositions are associated with calmness, and woody or amber-based scents often create a sense of grounding.”
This intentional approach allows fragrance wardrobes to be built around moods as one scent for workdays, another for unwinding, and a special one for nights out.
Contrary to popular belief, making perfume last longer has more to do with technique than quantity. Over-spraying can be overwhelming, especially in shared spaces or warm climates. Jain recommends, “Applying perfume to pulse points like wrists, neck, and inner elbows allows warmth to diffuse the scent gradually, while moisturised skin helps it last longer especially in warmer climates. Avoid rubbing the fragrance after spraying, as it can alter the scent’s evolution. The goal is to create a subtle fragrance aura that feels professional and noticeable without overwhelming shared spaces.” This method works for both light daytime scents and stronger evening fragrances, allowing them to evolve naturally on the skin.
Among the plethora of brands and scents, when choosing a fragrance for you, think about your daily routine, preferred moods, and climate. Start with versatile families like citrus-woody or soft florals, and always test before committing. For gifting, observe the recipient’s personality and lifestyle. Minimalists often prefer clean, fresh scents, while expressive personalities may enjoy deeper, statement fragrances.
