All eyes are on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, as she is all set to present Union Budget 2026-27. One of the talking points about Sitharaman is also the saree that she wears on this day. This is the 9th consecutive time when she will be presenting the budget and in all these years, Sitharaman has chosen to wear sarees that put our Indian culture on map. Different weaves, different designs and different art forms. Through her sarees, she always make a fashion statement.
This time around also, Sitharaman reached Rashtrapati Bhawan dressed in a Kanjeevaram saree from Tamil Nadu. A deep maroon colour with a contrasting border and golden detailing on it, she captivated the attention of many with her sartorial choice. She paired the saree with a yellow colour full-sleeves woolen blouse and also carried a shawl to beat the winter blues.
Kanjeevaram sarees from Tamil Nadu are typically made from pure mulberry silk fabric. They are woven on handlooms and what makes them durable is the fact that the body, border and pallu of the saree are woven separately and then interlocked together. Besides, the zari work that you see on these sarees is done using silver thread coated with gold. This explains why the sarees always a rich appeal to them.
Incidentally, this year, elections are going to be held in Tamil Nadu, among a slew of other states.

Last year too, Sitharaman had impressed many with her saree choice. It was an off-white saree that featured Madhubani fish embroidery work on it. What was interesting was that the saree was gifted to her by Padma Shri awardee Dulari Devi of Bihar. Through her sartorial pick, she subtly put spotlight on Bihar's folk art tradition.
One thing is for sure you can always count on Sitharaman to display and promote Indian handlooms and regional textiles with a lot of pride. And well, what better day than Budget day to do so.
