Open-plan homes are becoming increasingly popular in modern Indian architecture. By removing rigid physical boundaries between the kitchen and living areas, these layouts create a natural flow within the home. They encourage greater interaction among family members, make it easier to host gatherings, and add a strong sense of spaciousness, allowing natural light and movement to travel freely across the home.

“From a Vastu perspective, open-plan designs can be harmonised effectively with a few thoughtful considerations,” said Ankit Jain, Founder, Specta Quartz Surfaces, to Moneycontrol.

Here are three factors that play a crucial role.

Colour

Colour plays a significant rolein such spaces. “Light and pastel tones are generally preferred in Vastu for open areas, as they create a sense of calm and balance while visually expanding the space. These shades are now easily found in something as fundamental as kitchen countertops, making vastu-compliance possible even for kitchens that do not possess extensive furniture,” Jain said.

They help maintain harmony across the kitchen and living zones, ensuring that the environment feels unified rather than fragmented.

Directional alignment

Directional alignmentis another important aspect. He added, “Traditionally, Vastu recommends that the kitchen entrance should ideally be from the east, north, or west. The entrance should not be directly aligned with the main door of the home or face a toilet, as this is believed to disturb the sanctity of the food preparation area.”

In many ways, open-plan kitchens make this easier to achieve, as the absence of doors allows designers to plan layouts more flexibly while still respecting directional principles.

According to Jain, the living area is considered most auspicious in the north or northeast direction of the home. This placement allows the space to receive abundant natural light and maintain a welcoming energy for family members and guests.

Ventilation

Ventilation is another cornerstone of Vastu, as it represents the circulation and release of negative energies. “Open-plan homes naturally lend themselves to this principle. Large windows in the living area not only create a picturesque setting but also allow fresh air and sunlight to flow freely across both the living and kitchen spaces,” the expert shared.

When designed thoughtfully, open-plan homes can beautifully combine contemporary living with timeless Vastu principles, creating interiors that feel both vibrant and balanced.
