World Oral Health Day: Oral health, for many, still means a toothbrush and a quick rinse. Nevertheless, experts warn that the mouth is far more than a starting point for meals. It reflects the state of your digestion, immunity, and daily habits.

Dr Partap Chauhan, an Ayurvedic practitioner, explains, “The mouth is not separate from the body. It mirrors what is happening inside. When balance is disturbed, the signs often appear first in the oral cavity.”

Observed every year on March 20, World Oral Health Day was established to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Over the years, it has evolved from a focus on basic hygiene to a broader conversation about preventive care and long-term wellbeing.

In Ayurveda, the mouth is seen as the gateway to the digestive system.Healthy gums and clean teeth are not just about appearance, they support digestion and help the body absorb nutrients better.

“When digestion weakens, toxins begin to build up. These often show up as bad breath, coating on the tongue, or gum issues. Oral health is an early warning system,” says Dr Chauhan.

The theme for 2026 suggests that prevention is better than cure. “Simple daily rituals, when followed consistently, can maintain microbial balance in the mouth and support natural detoxification,” the expert says.

Simple mantras for oral health

Dr Chauhan shares a few simple but no less effective messages you should keep in mind to sustain your smile for ever:

  • Start your day with tongue cleaning: Removing the coating on the tongue helps clear toxins and freshens breath instantly.

  • Try oil pulling regularly: Swishing sesame or coconut oil can support gum strength and keep the mouth lubricated.

  • Choose herbal oral care: Using natural ingredients like neem and clove can gently protect teeth and gums.

  • Don’t ignore your digestion: A healthy gut often leads to a healthier mouth, reducing common issues like bad breath.

  • Be consistent with small habits: Health is built daily. It is not about big changes, but regular care.
