Summer offers children a welcome break from routine. But along with the excitement come unique challenges for parents trying to juggle screen time, hydration, outdoor safety, and nutrition. It’s a season of vacation, but also one that demands extra attention to kids’ health and habits.

Longer days and fewer schedules can often mean more screen time and fewer structured activities. According to Dr Suma Uday, Senior Consultant, Paediatric Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Bone Disease, Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, screen time should be capped at 1–2 hours daily. “Too much can impact sleep, mood, and posture,” she says.

Instead of spending time in front of a screen, she recommends encouraging hands-on activities like reading, arts, crafts, or board games. At the same time, ensure that kids are sleeping enough, 9 to 11 hours, depending on their age, by keeping a regular daily routine with time for meals, rest, study, and play.

Hydration, nutrition, and outdoor play:

Children often overlook thirst, making dehydration a silent summer risk. Dr Uday shares the importance of offering fluids regularly: “Keep water, coconut water, and fresh juices flowing.”

When it comes to outdoor play, it’s best to schedule activities during early mornings or late evenings, avoiding peak heat hours. Lightweight cotton clothing, hats, and shaded play areas help reduce heat exposure. Sunscreen is usually not necessary unless children have light skin or specific conditions that require sun protection. Nutrition is another summer essential.

Dr Uday advises adding seasonal fruits like watermelon, mango, and papaya, along with immunity boosters like turmeric, ginger, and curd. Cutting down on junk food and swapping in nutritious snacks can help maintain energy and support overall health.

Here are top 5 summer health tips for kids suggested by Dr Uday

  • Limit screen time wisely: Stick to 1–2 hours of screen time daily. Encourage creative play, hobbies, and interactive family activities instead.
  • Keep kids hydrated: Offer water, coconut water, and fresh juices often, even before kids say they’re thirsty.
  • Plan safe outdoor play: Schedule outdoor time during cooler parts of the day. Use protective clothing and avoid direct sun exposure.
  • Snack smart: Choose immunity-boosting options like fruit chaat, curd, yogurt smoothies, or nuts over packaged snacks.
  • Watch for heat stress: Be alert for signs like dizziness, fatigue, or irritability. Act quickly with rest, fluids, and cool environments.
