The monsoon season, and the months following the rains, is the time when you are the most vulnerable to infections. This irritating mix of moisture, temperature shifts, and increased exposure to germs can raise the risk of a host of problems, including ENT troubles, especially if left unaddressed.

One of the most common issues during monsoon is Swimmer’s Ear. It is an infection that can happen when water, especially from swimming in contaminated sources, gets trapped inside the ear canal. But it's not just about swimming. Even simple exposure to rain or steamy conditions can cause problems if there's an unnoticed scratch or wound inside the ear.

The humidity allows bacteria and fungus to thrive. Even minor injuries in the auditory canal can turn into full-blown infections, warns Dr Devkumar Rengaraja, Consultant-ENT, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi, Mumbai. “People with allergies, colds, or sinus problems are particularly vulnerable,” he adds.

Inflammation or congestion can block the auditory tube — the passage connecting the ear to the back of the nose and throat — causing fluid build-up, which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Common symptoms include pain, itching, swelling, discharge, fever, and sometimes even temporary hearing loss.

According to Dr Rengaraja, preventing ear infections doesn't require complicated routines — just mindful hygiene and a few practical steps. “Never insert fingers or cotton buds into the ears. They often cause micro-injuries, inviting bacteria to settle in,” says Dr Rengaraja.

Dr Rengaraja suggests a few golden rules to follow this rainy season:

  • Avoid scratching or poking your ears
  • Dry your ears gently with a clean towel after showers or rain
  • Stay away from contaminated water while swimming; use earplugs in clean water
  • Regularly disinfect headphones and earphones
  • Eat a balanced, immunity-boosting diet

If you notice discomfort, consult an ENT specialist immediately — don’t wait or self-medicate
While monsoon showers may nourish the earth, they shouldn’t disrupt your health. Staying alert to early symptoms and following basic ear care habits can make all the difference. With just a little attention, you can enjoy the rain—without the pain.
