Physical touch plays an important role in our well-being. It is one of the most primal forms of human connection, capable of calming the mind, reducing stress, and promoting emotional stability.

Research shows that physical touch stimulates the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone" or "bonding hormone." Oxytocin plays a significant role in building trust, reducing stress, and promoting a sense of safety and connection.

Additionally, physical touch can also help lower cortisol levels in your body. Cortisol is the hormone your body produces when you are stresses and elevated stress levels can also increase cortisol, which can have a range of detrimental effects on the body.

Studies indicate that physical contact with loved ones or even a simple touch from a friend can promote relaxation and mental balance.

Here are the benefits of physical touch, how it affects our mental health.

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

The simple act of being touched signals the brain to release endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers and mood boosters, which can help reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. According to a study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience, even brief moments of physical contact can have a significant impact on lowering blood pressure and reducing cortisol levels.

Physical touch is shown to be especially beneficial to combat anxiety. A study in Psychosomatic Medicine found that people who received supportive touch in times of stress experienced less psychological and physiological reactivity, including lower cortisol levels.

  • Improves mood and reduces feelings of loneliness

Touch can improve mood and combat loneliness. A study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships revealed that individuals who had more physical contact with their romantic partners reported feeling happier and more emotionally secure, even in the face of stress. People who are regularly deprived of human contact, such as those living in isolation, are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.
  • Enhances emotional bonding and social connection

Studies have shown that couples who engage in more physical touch, such as holding hands, hugging, or cuddling, experience a greater sense of intimacy and emotional connection. Similarly, physical touch among family members, such as parents comforting children with a hug or a kiss, fosters a sense of safety and security in the relationship, leading to healthier emotional development in children.

Additionally, research has consistently shown that babies who experience regular touch, such as being held, massaged, or cuddled, grow up to be more emotionally secure and less anxious. This is why skin-to-skin contact in the first few hours after birth is encouraged to foster bonding and emotional stability between mothers and newborns.

So don’t shy away from hugs and holding hands as these promoting connection and intimacy. A massage will help relieve tension and support emotional healing. Petting animals can also lower stress and boost mood, while self-touch, like placing a hand on the heart or self-massage, provides comfort and grounding.
