National Dengue Day 2024: Recognising symptoms and effective prevention tips by expert

National Dengue Day 2024: If you are infected with dengue fever you might experience some debilitating symptoms like pounding headache, severe muscle and joint pain, and a high fever that just won’t go away. Prevention is crucial, as the disease can quickly escalate from mild discomfort to life-threatening complications.

Dengue fever spreads through infected Aedes mosquitoes, active during daytime, breeding in stagnant water, particularly in urban areas. The virus has four serotypes: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4, transmitted through mosquito bites, perpetuating community spread. Environmental factors like climate change and urbanisation foster mosquito proliferation, escalating dengue transmission.

Dr Nikhil Kulkarni, Consultant-Internal Medicine, S.L Raheja Hospital, Mahim - A Fortis Associate, shares effective prevention tips to avoid dengue:

Eliminate sources of stagnant water: Reduce mosquito habitat by removing sources of stagnant water around your home, such as flower pots, buckets, and discarded tires. Regularly empty and clean water containers to prevent mosquito breeding.

Use window and door screens: Use these screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. Repair any holes or tears in screens to ensure maximum protection.

Apply insect repellent: Always use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin and clothing. Reapply repellent as directed, especially if you are spending time outdoors.

Opt for protective clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes to minimise exposed skin. Choose light-colored clothing, as mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors.

Use a mosquito net: Use a net treated with insecticide while sleeping, particularly if you live in areas with high mosquito activity or if you are traveling to dengue-endemic regions.

Avoid water stagnation: Regularly check and clean gutters, drains, and other areas where water can accumulate. Cover water storage containers to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Keep the house well-lit and airy: Mosquitoes are less active in well-lit areas, so use bright lights outdoors and keep indoor spaces well-ventilated to deter mosquitoes from entering.

Time your outdoor visits: Avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito activity periods, such as early morning and late afternoon. If you must go outdoors, use mosquito repellent and wear protective clothing to minimise exposure.
