Fans of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective are about to meet a very different Sherlock Holmes. Younger, rough around the edges, and far from the composed genius of Baker Street, Young Sherlock is set to trace the formative years of the legendary sleuth before he became a master of deduction.
Adapted from Andrew Lane’s popular Young Sherlock Holmes novels, the upcoming series Young Sherlock will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on March 4. The show dives into Sherlock’s teenage years, focusing on the experiences and mistakes that shape his sharp intellect and rebellious instincts.
The origin series is directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, marking his return to the Sherlock universe after helming the blockbuster films starring Robert Downey Jr. This time, Ritchie teams up again with Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who plays the titular role of Young Sherlock. Matthew Parkhill serves as the showrunner and also joins Ritchie as an executive producer.
Recently, Amazon Prime Video announced the release date with a playful tease on social media: “Stay out of trouble? We’ll see about that. Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock arrives March 4.” The message sets the tone for a series that promises mischief, mystery, and the early sparks of brilliance.
According to the official synopsis, Sherlock Holmes is introduced as a disgraced and impulsive young man who becomes entangled in a murder investigation that threatens his freedom. Set primarily in 1870s Oxford, the story follows his first-ever case, which slowly unfolds into a globe-trotting conspiracy. What begins as a fight for survival ends up changing the course of his life forever.
The teaser offers glimpses of Sherlock arriving at Oxford, being warned to stay out of trouble, and predictably doing the opposite. From investigating a break-in to landing behind bars, the clip captures his restless curiosity. It closes on a familiar note, with the young detective declaring, “The game’s afoot.”
Adding an intriguing twist, the series reimagines James Moriarty not as an enemy but as a close friend. The role is played by Dónal Finn. The ensemble cast also includes Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, Zine Tseng, and Colin Firth.
With a fresh take on a classic character and Guy Ritchie’s signature flair, Young Sherlock aims to offer fans a gripping look at how a legend is born.
