The Women in Cinema Collective's decision to propose a set of recommendations for a more equitable and secure workplace within the Malayalam film industry comes weeks after the publication of the Justice K Hema Committee report. This report shed light on the alleged exploitation and ill-treatment of women in the Malayalam film industry. The committee was established by the Kerala government in response to the 2017 actress assault case and its findings revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry.

Following the allegations of sexual harassment and exploitation against several actors and directors, the state government announced the formation of a seven-member special investigation team on August 25th to investigate these claims.
