Actor and stand-up comedian Vir Das is making history as the first Indian celebrity to host the prestigious International Emmy Awards in New York City on November 25, 2024.
Known for his sharp wit and unique perspective, Vir took to social media to express his excitement about the opportunity.
However, in true Vir Das fashion, he also made a heartfelt and refreshing appeal to budding Indian designers.
In his post, he wrote: "Alright folks. I'm going to be the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards. I'm going to wear something Indian from home. I'm also not going to wear a fancy designer. They have enough cash and clients. So we're gonna launch someone new."
This call to action wasn't just a casual mention—it was a thoughtful invitation for up-and-coming Indian designers to showcase their work on one of the world's biggest stages.
Vir is looking for "super duper ultra formal" Indian or Indo-Western fusion outfits for the event, emphasizing that he doesn’t need a tuxedo but something truly unique that blends Indian tradition with contemporary formal wear. "You have to make me look good in formal wear, which is a task I assure you :-)," he joked, showing his trademark humor.
He encouraged designers, labels, and students to send in their portfolios and ideas, noting that the winning designer would be paid for their work, along with full credit for the outfit.
"We will pay you for your work, pay for the outfit and credit you. You will have to work with my team to get the vision and design right," Vir added, making it clear that this is a serious opportunity for rising talent.
For many, this is a chance of a lifetime to dress an international star for a global event, and it speaks volumes about Vir’s commitment to uplifting fresh talent and his pride in Indian craftsmanship.
