Arjun Bijlani, a prominent figure in Indian television, has openly discussed the challenging working hours in the TV sector, labelling them as "very tough" and frequently overlooked.
In a candid discussion with IANS, the actor noted that a typical 12-hour shift seldom stays confined to those hours when considering preparation time, overtime, and travel.
Describing the truth about daily shooting timetables, Arjun highlighted that the morning usually begins well before the scheduled call time. For a 9 am shift, performers must rise by 7 am and depart for work by 8 am. He noted that female actors are often requested even earlier because the makeup process is time-consuming.
He said, "Shooting typically continues until 9 pm or even later," Arjun noted, mentioning that taking off makeup and costumes requires extra time. "Then, you must contend with traffic on your way home, extending the length of your day. This routine recurs daily."
The actor emphasised that the fatigue intensifies since the schedule stays the same the following day. With minimal time for rest or recuperation, the schedule gradually becomes exhausting both mentally and physically.
Reflecting on his earlier career days, Arjun mentioned there were instances when he found himself working 35 days in a 30-day month once overtime was included. “It was extremely challenging—both mentally and physically,” he confessed.
Recognising that the workload was tougher previously, Arjun mentioned that conditions have marginally improved over time. He claims that numerous producers are now striving to complete filming within the designated 12-hour timeframe.
"Previously, shoots would last for 14, 15, or even 18 hours. That has decreased now," he stated.
Reasons 8-hour shifts are impractical
In response to the question of whether television should adopt an 8-hour workday, Arjun clarified why this isn’t technically possible.
“If you're broadcasting daily, completing work in eight hours is nearly unfeasible,” he remarked, emphasizing that reduced shifts would invariably impact the quality of the end product. “To provide high-quality content, you must invest those 12 hours,” he averred.
Arjun Bijlani remains a favorite as he makes his comeback to the celebrity comedy cooking series Laughter Chefs Season 3. The Rise and Fall winner was seen on set earlier, showcasing his trademark charm.
