A case has been officially lodged at Jalandhar’s Sadar Police Station against Bollywood actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, director Gopichand Malineni, and producer Naveen Yerneni, following allegations of hurting religious sentiments with a controversial scene in their latest film, Jaat.
Vikalp Gold, a resident of Jalandhar's Pholdiwal village, filed the complaint, which led to the filing of the FIR under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Christians, in particular, are outraged by the incident and have protested outside the Police Commissioner's office, calling for action. Additionally, they filed a formal memorandum requesting that the filmmakers be charged.
The complaint centres on a specific scene from Jaat in which the antagonist, played by Randeep Hooda, is shown inside a church standing beneath a crucifix on the pulpit as worshippers offer up prayers. It has been said that the sequence is extremely offensive and purports to show acts of intimidation and disorderly behaviour inside the church. Many people in the community think the portrayal desecrates the sanctity of the pulpit, the most sacred area of the church, and mocks the crucifixion of Lord Jesus Christ.
While protests and legal troubles are gaining traction, the controversy hasn’t dented the film’s commercial success. Jaat has concluded its first week at the box office with an impressive collection of approximately Rs 61.50 crore nett. The film, directed by Malineni and produced under the banners of Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory, features Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh in pivotal roles.
Despite the uproar, Jaat is gearing up for a competitive weekend as it prepares to face off with Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2. Whether the ongoing controversy will impact its future earnings remains to be seen.
