South Indian Artistes Association rises in Kamal Haasan's defense amid Kannada language row

The South Indian Artistes Association (SIAA) has vocally stood by veteran actor Kamal Haasan amidst a burgeoning controversy ignited by his recent remarks concerning the Kannada language. The SIAA released a robust statement imploring the Karnataka government, its populace, and the Kannada film industry to discern the true intent behind Haasan's comments, which have unfortunately sparked widespread backlash.

The association underscored the potential for this current dispute to establish a "dark precedent" within the realms of cinema and public discourse. They argued that misrepresenting a figure of Kamal Haasan's stature and consistent advocacy for regional and linguistic unity constitutes a significant injustice. The SIAA’s statement highlighted Haasan’s deep-rooted friendships with iconic Kannada personalities, including legendary actor Dr. Rajkumar and acclaimed playwright and actor Girish Karnad, emphasizing his profound appreciation for diverse literature and cultural expression.

Furthermore, the SIAA invoked Kamal Haasan's unwavering support during a critical juncture in Karnataka's history. The statement recalled, "When the legendary Dr Rajkumar was abducted, Kamal Haasan was among the first voices to speak out and call for his release." It further detailed his familial bond with Dr. Rajkumar, whom he considered a brother, and Dr. Shivarajkumar, whom he regards as a son.

The association vehemently condemned the portrayal of Kamal Haasan as anti-Kannada, labeling such accusations as "entirely unacceptable." They asserted that no individual possessing "awareness and rationality" could justify such a campaign against an artist of his caliber. The SIAA concluded its statement by affirming, "Kamal Haasan is a legendary artist who has transcended the barriers of caste, religion, race, and language to dedicate his life to the service of art. To question his integrity is to insult decades of cultural unity and artistic excellence."

This staunch backing from the SIAA has garnered considerable support across the southern film industries, fostering calls for more mature and respectful dialogue in the wake of the controversy. Despite the mounting pressure, Kamal Haasan has steadfastly refused to apologize. Speaking to the media in Chennai, he asserted, "It is a democracy. I believe in the law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it except for those who have an agenda. I've been threatened earlier too, and if I am wrong, I would apologise, if I'm not, I won't." In a significant development, Kamal Haasan's upcoming film, 'Thug Life', has reportedly been banned by the Karnataka Film Chamber.
