Rajinikanth to star in Kamal Haasan’s production ‘Thalaivar 173’, set for Pongal 2027

Rajinikanth Kamal Haasan collaborate for a new film

Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are all set to collaborate for the upcoming film, Thalaivar 173. Rajinikanth will star in the film, which will be produced by Kamal Haasan and directed by Sundar C.

Kamal Haasan took to his Instagram and shared the official announcement on Wednesday. The post also featured a picture of the veteran actors shaking hands. Another pic showed Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth posing with the crew.

The post was captioned, “Like wind like rain like river. Let's shower and enjoy and live! Rajkamal Films International Production directed by Sundar.C by Dear Friend Super Star Rajinikanth #Thalaivar173 #Pongal2027.”

Meanwhile, the official statement attached in the post reads, “Superstar Rajinikanth is set to headline in the magnum opus 'Thalaivar 173', under Kamal Haasan's RaajKamal Films International banner directed by Sundar C."

The statement continued, "This landmark collaboration not only unites two towering forces of Indian cinema but also celebrates five decades of friendship and brotherhood between Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan- a bond that continues to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike."

The statement further noted, “Commemorating 44 years of Raajkamal Films International, #Thalaivar173 unites Superstar Rajinikanth’s magnetic screen presence with Sundar C’s direction, in a landmark production envisioned by Kamal Haasan and R. Mahendran. #Thalaivar173 is slated for a grand theatrical release through Red Giant Movies during Pongal 2027.”

Thalaivar 173 is expected to hit the theatres during Pongal 2027.

Rajinikanth, who most recently starred in Lokesh Kanagaraj's film Coolie, had a successful year. With a stellar cast that included Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Upendra, and Aamir Khan, the movie made over Rs 500 crore at the box office globally, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 2025.

The superstar is now working on the follow-up to his 2023 hit movie, Jailer. The Nelson-directed movie, titled Jailer 2, will feature Rajinikanth reprising his role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar are anticipated to make brief appearances.
