Singer Sonu Nigam has issued a serious warning to his followers after falling prey to online identity theft. The artist, known for his powerful voice and decades of contribution to Indian music, recently discovered that several fake accounts had been impersonating him on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), spreading misleading and controversial content.
Sonu Nigam posted a statement on Instagram, revealing the misuse of his name and clarifying that he has been inactive on X for the past eight years. “It has come to my attention that someone has been misusing my identity online. Please note that no one from my team has ever reached out to anyone on my behalf for any reason,” he wrote. The singer emphasised that any messages or requests made in his name should be treated with caution.
The impersonation came to light when fans began flagging suspicious activity on accounts that appeared to be managed by the singer. Shocked by the false representation, Sonu Nigam took immediate action by alerting his fans and urging them to report and block these accounts. He added, “If you come across such fake accounts or messages, please REPORT AND BLOCK.”
In his statement, Sonu Nigam expressed heartfelt thanks to his fans for bringing the matter to his attention. “Thank you to those who’ve flagged the issue to me. And thank you so much, my extended family, for your continued support and understanding,” he said, showing his appreciation for his fanbase’s vigilance.
To further caution his followers, Sonu Nigam added a note in his post that read, “If you come across any suspicious/fake messages under my name, it would be great if you could report or block the account.”
Interestingly, this incident follows shortly after singer Shreya Ghoshal’s account was hacked in March. Fortunately, she was able to recover her account with help from the platform’s support team.
The growing trend of impersonation and hacking on social media platforms continues to be a concern for public figures. Sonu Nigam’s proactive stance highlights the importance of awareness and online safety, urging fans to stay alert and verify any communication that appears to come from him or his team.
As online threats evolve, celebrities like Nigam are reminding their fans that social media can be a double-edged sword—while it connects, it also carries the risk of being misused.
