Satyajit Ray's classic film Aranyer Din Ratri, which stars Simi Garewal and Sharmila Tagore, was restored in 4K and screened at the 78th Film Festival under the Cannes Classics section. However, the film received a standing ovation at the global event.
The jewellery designer and Sharmila Tagore’s daughter, Saba Pataudi, took to her Instagram and shared a video from the memorable moment on Wednesday. The video showed the audience giving a standing ovation after the film's screening.
Alongside the video, she penned in the caption, “A little more.... of moments. Standing ovation. A beautiful celebration of life. Team that made it all possible. Congratulations! @filmheritagefoundation."
Tagore returned to Cannes after more than a decade. Previously, she attended the global event in 2009 as a part of the gala jury. However, her 1960 film Devi, also directed by Ray, competed for the Palme d'Or, the festival's top honour.
However, Saba Pataudi also shared photos from the Cannes 2025 and posed with her mother, Sharmila Tagore, Simi Garewal, and the film's gala presenter and Hollywood filmmaker, Wes Anderson. He is notably a long-time admirer of filmmaker Satyajit Ray and spearheaded its six-year restoration.
The 4K restored version of Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) was presented and restored by Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation through its World Cinema Project initiative at L'Immagine Ritrovata in collaboration with Shivendra Singh Dungarpur's Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection.

Based on the novel of the same name by author Sunil Gangopadhyay, the film also featured an ensemble cast of Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Robi Ghosh and Aparna Sen.
The movie follows four carefree, jaded middle-class bachelors from Calcutta who escape to the forests of Palamau for a holiday, only to undergo a journey of self-discovery.
