What began as a shocking late-night incident outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s home has now unfolded into a far more complex investigation, with Mumbai Police exploring possible international money links behind the attack.

The firing, which took place outside Rohit Shetty’s Juhu residence on 31 January, left the industry startled and raised serious concerns about the safety of public figures in Mumbai.

As the probe deepens, officials have reportedly traced a series of anonymous cash deposits and withdrawals that may point towards cross-border involvement.

According to reports by News18, some of these financial transactions are believed to be connected to areas near the Nepal border, suggesting that the operation may not have been entirely localised. Special teams have been formed to follow the money trail and determine whether overseas funding supported what investigators are calling the “Agra module”.

Several individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, including Deepak Chandra Sharma, Sonu Thakur, Hrithik Yadav, Vinshu Kushwaha, Jatin Bhardwaj and Vishal Thakur.

The accused, reportedly from Agra, Etawah and parts of Haryana, are said to have been paid Rs 50,000 in advance, with the promise of a larger payout after carrying out the attack.

Police believe the operation may have been divided between two groups — a Pune-based unit handling logistics and coordination, and a North India-based group that allegedly executed the firing.

Earlier reports suggested that recruitment may have taken place through social media platforms and local contacts, allegedly involving members linked to the Shubham Lonkar gang.

Investigators have also explored possible connections to gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, whose name has surfaced in multiple cases involving threats to celebrities.

Although no injuries were reported in the four shots fired outside Rohit Shetty’s residence, the incident has understandably unsettled many within the film fraternity. In recent days, other actors have also received threats.

Ranveer Singh reportedly received a WhatsApp voice note demanding Rs 10 crore in ransom, while Ayush Sharma, Salman Khan’s brother-in-law, was sent a threatening email via Proton Mail from a sender allegedly claiming links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
