Actor Vishwak Sen and Kayadu Lohar's Telugu comedy Funky, which hit the screens today (February 13), is directed by Anudeep KV who directed Jathi Rathnalu. The movie is all about a funny, silly ride full of laughs. But does it keep that promise? Let's take a closer look in this review.
Plot:
The movie is about a filmmaker named Komal (Vishwak Sen) who is making a movie called Funky. As production costs go through the roof, the producer (Naresh Vijayakrishna) faces health issues that make him unable to work. His daughter Chitra (Kayadu Lohar) has to step in and take charge.
Chitra is worried about the growing losses, so she decides to fire Komal and finish the shoot with new leadership. What comes next is a messy fight between egos and goals. The main question is whether Komal will be able to get his job back.
What works:
Vishwak Sen leaves behind his usual serious role and takes on a lighter, more funny one. It's nice to see him try a new genre, and his delivery of strange one-liners is good. His performance is honest and full of energy, but better writing could have made his character even better.
As the producer's daughter, Kayadu Lohar makes a good impression. She looks great on screen and shares good chemistry with Vishwak Sen. There are a few jokes in each half that do make people laugh. The movie's short runtime is also a plus because it keeps it from being too tiring.
What doesn't:
Even though the creators have asked people to 'leave logic aside and enjoy' before the movie came out, Funky has a hard time holding together as a whole. The main problem is that it doesn't have a good story flow. Scenes look like they were put together without a clear order, which makes it hard for people to stay interested.
Some of the jokes work, but the script as a whole doesn't seem to have a clear direction. Funky often feels like a random collection of skits, while Jathi Rathnalu thrived on absurdity but kept the story going. The movie doesn't have a strong conflict or emotional depth to hold the comedy together.
An attempt to add emotional weight to the climax doesn't quite work. Also, the songs don't have any effect, and the dubbing in some parts doesn't seem to match up.
Technicalities:
Bheems Ceciroleo, a music composer, makes a soundtrack that is mostly forgettable. However, Suresh Sarangam's cinematography makes the movie look better, with bright frames adding to the movie's colorful tone. The production values are good.
The editing isn't very good, but the random scenes make it hard for this department to fix things. Director Anudeep KV's emphasis on quick one-liners takes away from the need for well-written funny scenes. Some subplots, like the Sampath Raj track, don't seem to be needed and don't add much to the story.
Verdict:
Funky is a below-average comedy-drama that relies more on random one-liners than on a well-structured story. Vishwak Sen and Kayadu Lohar give good performances, but the movie is disappointing because it doesn't have a clear plot or emotional connection. This is especially true because of the high expectations for Anudeep KV's name.
