Ranbir Kapoor and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s controversial blockbuster Animal is gearing up for a fresh theatrical run, nearly two years after its original release. The film is officially set to release in Japanese theatres in February 2026, a move that could significantly boost its global box office total and push it closer to the coveted Rs 1000 crore mark.
The makers announced the Japan release on Wednesday through social media, confirming that Animal will open across Japanese cinemas on February 13, 2026.
Production house Bhadrakali Films shared a special Japan-release poster featuring Ranbir Kapoor’s intense look from the film, accompanied by a Japanese caption that translated to: “This man cannot be stopped.”
The caption also described Animal as “the most talked-about, debated, and unforgettable cinematic experience,” signalling confidence in the film’s overseas appeal.
Originally released in December 2023, Animal emerged as one of the biggest box office successes in Indian cinema. The film earned Rs 553 crore net in India and went on to collect approximately Rs 915 crore gross worldwide, finishing its initial run as the ninth-highest-grossing Indian film of all time. Despite fierce criticism for its excessive violence and alleged misogynistic undertones, the film struck a chord with a large section of audiences, ensuring packed theatres and sustained collections.
Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga had earlier defended the film’s creative choices, maintaining that its aggressive tone and moral ambiguity were part of his storytelling vision. While critics remained divided, Animal became a pop culture talking point, fuelled by Ranbir Kapoor’s transformative performance and Bobby Deol’s menacing antagonist role.
The Japan release comes at a crucial moment in the box office race. Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, is expected to surpass Animal’s worldwide collection imminently and cross the Rs 1000 crore mark by the end of December 2025. Trade estimates suggest Dhurandhar could finish its global run between Rs 1000 and Rs 1100 crore, potentially pushing Animal down the all-time rankings.
However, the Japanese theatrical run offers Animal a chance at reclaiming lost ground. In recent years, Indian films have found strong acceptance in Japan. SS Rajamouli’s RRR earned approximately ¥2.4 billion (over Rs 150 crore) in the country, while KGF: Chapter 2 grossed around ¥1.1 billion (about Rs 70 crore). If Animal manages to replicate even a fraction of this success, it could comfortably cross the Rs 1000 crore milestone.
Animal stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, and Triptii Dimri in key roles. Whether the film can convert controversy into commercial momentum once again will be closely watched when it hits Japanese screens early next year.
