Kangana Ranaut starrer Emergency was a huge flop at the box office despite the makers creating hype about the film. The film managed to gross around Rs 23 crore worldwide. However, actress-turned-politician Divya Spandana, known professionally as Ramya, has recently reflected on the failure of the film.
During the latest panel discussion at the Bengaluru International Film Festival, Ramya addressed why Emergency failed to leave a mark at the box office. During the session, Ramya stated that while Kangana is a “talented” actress, she felt that the film Emergency was poorly made.
Ramya shared, “Emergency was a badly made film. Kangana Ranaut is a very talented actress and it has nothing to do with her as a person. But that movie was bad and that is why the audience rejected it. Kangana also made Manikarnika and that was a hit because the content was good and the audience liked it.”
Kangana’s Emergency was released on January 17, 2025, after multiple delays because of legal reasons. The film revolves around the 21-month Emergency imposed by Gandhi, from 1975 to 1977, often referred to as the darkest chapter of independent India.
Kangana portrays the role of the former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The actress notably directed the film. The film received mixed reviews from the audience and critics alike.
Besides Kangana, Emergency also stars Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi.
