A legal challenge has emerged against the upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat, with a petition filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to block its release because the title allegedly defames the Brahmin community. The plea was moved barely two days after the OTT giant unveiled the movie at an event in Mumbai.

Filed by Mahender Chaturvedi through Advocate Vineet Jindal, the writ petition requests the court to issue a stay on the film’s release and streaming.

The petitioner claims that the title Ghooskhor Pandat — which associates the term “Pandat” (a variant of Pandit) with corruption and bribery — is offensive to the dignity and reputation of Brahmins, and harms his own standing as a student and teacher of Indian scriptures.

According to the plea, the word “Pandat” traditionally signifies scholarship, ethical conduct and moral authority within Indian society, and its linking with graft and corruption in the title and promotional material constitutes collective defamation of a religious and social group.

The petition also argues that such portrayal violates fundamental rights under Articles 14 (equality before law), 21 (protection of life and personal liberty), and 25 (freedom of conscience and religion) of the Constitution of India.

While acknowledging the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a), the plea asserts that this right is not absolute and does not extend to content that may amount to hate speech, defamation, or disturb communal harmony, citing reasonable restrictions under Article 19(2). The petitioner additionally criticised the absence of an effective regulatory framework for OTT platforms to prevent the misuse of creative freedom that could incite communal tensions.

Ghooskhor Pandat, starring Manoj Bajpayee as a corrupt police office nicknamed “Pandat,” along with Nushrat Bharuccha, Saqib Saleem, Akshay Oberoi and Divya Dutta, is written by Neeraj Pandey and Ritesh Shah, with Shah directing.
