3 Body Problem Season 2 & 3 greenlit; creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss: We had hoped to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us

Netflix has confirmed that there will be two more seasons of 3 Body Problem, the sci-fi series about the end of a world and an alien invasion, based on Chinese writer Cixin Liu's book trilogy by the same name.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss - well-known as the creators of the Game of Thrones series - joined hands with Alexander Woo to create, write and executive produce 3 Body Problem.

In a press release on the renewal of the series, they said: “Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!”

What happened in 3 Body Problem Season 1

The first eight episodes of the series, which dropped on Netflix in March, set up the premise: A young scientist in Mao's China extends a welcome to an alien race. She is convinced humans can't be left in-charge of earth. The alien race - the San-Ti - are now headed towards us. A superior race, the San-Ti had originally planned to cohabit earth with humans. But they are tripped up by the human capacity to lie (to be fair, it is a trait we share with some other animals on the planet).

Indeed, among the many bone-chilling moments in 3 Body Problem Season 1 on Netflix, there's the particularly heart-stopping one when a storytelling session turns the San-Ti against humans. (The San-Ti are appalled that the wolf in Red Riding Hood tries to impersonate the little girl's grandmother.) As parables on 'how much control humans actually exert over their environment' versus 'how much we think we can control' go, it is bone-chilling.

(Speaking of chilling, there is quite a bit of murder and mayhem in the series. Not only does the body count keep rising, but the way in which people are killed keeps getting bloodier too.)

3 Body Problem Season 1 was among the Top 10 Netflix series in 93 countries. The series stars Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, Benedict Wong and Jonathan Pryce.

What does 3 Body Problem mean?

The title '3 Body Problem' captures an astronomical problem: The San-Ti are part of a solar system that has three bodies that exert gravity. The environment on this planet, therefore, can no longer sustain life, prompting the San-Ti to seek an invitation to another planet. They need just one human to say yes, and find that unlikely host somewhere in Mao's China. The San-Ti are now heading to earth. ETA: 400 years.

Peter Friedlander, vice-president, scripted series (US & Canada), Netflix, said in a press release: “The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through 'Death’s End'.”
