Om Raut on a mission to bring Maharashtra’s heroes to the big screen

Om Raut has carved a niche in Indian cinema by transforming Maharashtra’s real-life heroes into unforgettable on-screen legends.

Known for his selective approach to filmmaking, Om Raut has brought stories like Lokmanya: Ek Yugpurush and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior to life, and is now gearing up for his latest project, Inspector Zende.

For Om Raut, this passion for historical narratives stems from childhood. “The stories that we have in our culture, the stories that we have in the great history of Bharat, are something that I would like to tell. And because I come from Maharashtra and I am a Marathi boy, these are the stories that I grew up with. These are the stories that were told to me by my grandparents and my parents. So, they have a deep impact on me while growing up. From everything that I have understood, I have only tried to recreate that in cinema,” he explains.

He added, “Going by all this, I love to tell tales of grassroot stories. That’s why we created Lokmanya: Ek Yugpurush and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which focused on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s lieutenant, Tanhaji Malusare. These legends come from the soil of Maharashtra, including Inspector Zende. The way these people have contributed to the richness of our nation is something that’s very important. With everything that I know about such legendary people, I like to bring all of it in front of the audience.”

The genesis of Inspector Zende is deeply personal. Om Raut’s father, a journalist, had interacted with the Mumbai police officer and was fascinated by his remarkable career. “My father often spoke about Inspector Zende’s achievements. Bringing his story to screen feels like fulfilling a family legacy,” Raut shares. “He’s a fascinating figure, and it’s a whole different feeling to present his life to the audience.”

Through his films, Om Raut is redefining how history is depicted in cinema—blending authenticity with grandeur, and emotional depth with visual spectacle. His work not only entertains but also preserves cultural heritage, ensuring that the courage and spirit of Maharashtra’s heroes continue to inspire generations.

With Inspector Zende on the horizon, Om Raut’s cinematic journey remains a testament to how deeply rooted storytelling can resonate far beyond its place of origin, becoming part of the nation’s collective memory.
