Recently LE SSERAFIM's performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival ignited a wave of scrutiny and debate regarding the members' capabilities. The group's appearance at one of the world's largest music festivals was met with both excitement and criticism, sparking a broader conversation about talent management within the K-pop industry and the immense pressures placed on idols.
Taking the stage on the festival's second day in Indio, California, LE SSERAFIM delivered a 40-minute set featuring hits like 'ANTIFRAGILE', 'FEARLESS', and 'Perfect Night'. However, despite the prestigious platform provided by Coachella, the group faced backlash over what some perceived as a lack of professionalism and proficiency among its members.
Particularly, LE SSERAFIM drew attention for being the quickest group to perform at Coachella since their debut, raising questions about their readiness for such a prominent stage. Online criticism centered on issues such as vocal projection and pitch stability, with comparisons to established acts like BLACKPINK and aespa, who had previously wowed audiences at Coachella.
The controversy prompted Sakura to address the situation on the fan communication platform Weverse. In her message, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to perform at Coachella and acknowledged the steep learning curve leading up to the event. Despite the challenges, Sakura emphasised the pride she felt in representing LE SSERAFIM on the international stage, highlighting the significance of the experience for the group's growth and development.
"From preparing for Coachella to the day of the performance, we learned a lot. Despite debuting less than two years ago and having only toured once, we stood proudly on the Coachella stage, pouring all our strength into it. That alone, was satisfying, a day when I truly felt like Le Sserafim. The performance may have looked immature to some. However, nobody is perfect, and it is an undisputed fact that it was the best set among those we have shown. It was a platform fueled by our aspiration to evolve as a team in the future and our unwavering commitment to strive harder," she wrote.
