There have been times when K-pop idols have accidentally followed their own fans. Most recently, K-pop idol ILLIT accidentally followed a fan account on Twitter. This mistake quickly went viral, largely due to the fan account's previous tweets addressing plagiarism accusations against NewJeans, specifically related to the Mexican girl group Jeans.
The fan account posted screenshots of the follow and highlighted how the members are actively monitoring Twitter. These posts quickly gained traction on Twitter and the Korean forum TheQoo, sparking significant online discussion.
ILLIT’s accidental follow attracted a flood of comments from netizens. "ILLIT’s legendary public mistake... wow," wrote a follower. "Following a foreigner who wrote a post saying that NewJeans plagiarised lmao," commented another.
Many netizens were amazed by the situation and voiced their thoughts with reactions like "Wow really..." and "I used to think the members were innocent, but after seeing this..."
A user remarked, "Where are the people who said the kids are innocent? Lmao. In the end, they’ll claim the members didn’t do it, but everything is out now."
Particularly noteworthy was the realisation that the follow came from the members' personal Twitter account, not an official promotional account run by the company. This led to even more speculation and commentary. "Wait, you mean it’s the members’ Twitter??" wrote a user. "It’s not an official promotional account run by the company, but an account where the members communicate with fans. It’s the members’ Twitter... lol," noted another.
"They followed 3 accounts and then unfollowed them, that’s a real mistake," said a fan. "Do they think they’re invincible because they’re under HYBE? This is just like Source Music’s downfall," commented another netizen.
As the incident unfolded, ILLIT quickly unfollowed the fan account, but the buzz surrounding the mistake continued to reverberate across social media.
