Boong is a charming slice of Manipuri cinema that will soon be shown on a large screen. This highly acclaimed film, which was directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, is scheduled to open in a few PVR INOX theatres in India on September 19, 2025.
Boong is finally returning home after receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews at international film festivals, including its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
Boong, a film produced by Excel Entertainment in association with Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures, has subtly gained popularity due to its soul as well as its stunning storytelling and visuals.
It blends professional and first-time actors, and the result is something deeply rooted and incredibly real.
At the centre of Boong is a little boy living with his single mother in a quiet Manipuri village. His father, Joykumar, once worked in another town but has vanished without a trace. There are no answers — only questions. Has he passed away? Or did he choose to leave them behind? Hoping to bring joy to his mother, Boong and his best friend set off on a journey to find him. What follows is an emotional, often bittersweet tale of love, loss, resilience, and the power of hope.

Filmmaker Lakshmipriya Devi shared what the film means to her, “‘Boong’ is the book I could not write because of my bad English! The film is inspired by my grandmother’s folktales that cushioned me with a certain kind of fuzzy warmth, during my childhood. It is dedicated to the resilience of the people of Manipur. I am experiencing this crazy mix of complete disbelief, happiness and a whole lot of gratitude that a Manipuri film is finally reaching a wider audience, in mainland India! Come and say hello to ‘Boong’!”
Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR INOX Pictures, said, “At PVR INOX, our endeavour is to bring diverse stories from across the world to our audiences. We believe there’s an audience for every kind of cinema... We are thrilled to release Boong, an acclaimed Manipuri film that is deeply rooted in local experiences while having a universal appeal.”
The film is being distributed in India by Anil Thadani (AA Films Pvt. Ltd.), and will be screened in select cities. If you’re in the mood for a story that touches the heart and opens a window into the soul of Manipur, don’t miss Boong this September.
