As Mammootty’s period gothic thriller finishes 21 days in theatre, it has already surpassed the collection of the Mammootty-Jayaram-starrer Abraham Ozler. This monochrome classic is already the third-highest grosser of this year and is said to have collected Rs 60 crore worldwide. The news was shared by the makers on their official media platforms. On Monday, the film is said to have grossed over Rs 59 crore. The film is said to have collected Rs 29.27 crore from Kerala and Rs 25.82 crore from the rest of India. In its first week, it recorded Rs 17.85 crore.
Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, the film, shot inside a decadent mansion, features only three principal characters. Mammootty plays Kunjumon Potti, a menacing old man who enslaves a young folk singer (Arjun Asokan) in his mansion. Soon it is revealed that Potti is a goblin who has possessed the body of a Brahmin magician who had come to the mansion to exorcise him. Sidharth Bharathan plays a nameless cook who is biding his time to take his vengeance. Spearheaded by a stellar Mammootty who breathes fire as the unpredictable Potti, the film is a slow burner that soon evolves into a brilliant cat-and-mouse game between the protagonists.
Though an unlikely contender at the box office, more so it was released between a rom-com (Premalu) and survival thriller (Manjummel Boys) that are both having a field day at the box office, Bramayugam is surprisingly holding on its own. The director’s earlier work, Bhoothakalam, a psychological horror that was a direct OTT release, featuring Revathy and Shane Nigam won much critical acclaim. The film also collected 25 crores overseas. The film was later released in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada and was produced by The Night Shift Studios and YNOT Studios. Bramayugam has shown consistency at the box office performances till now.
For Mammootty, this is also his third Rs 50-crore film after Bheeshma Parvam and Kannur Squad. He seems to be on a dream run, slipping into image-breaking roles and redefining stardom at the age of 72. His upcoming film Turbo, directed by Vysakh, and written by Mithun Manuel Thomas is said to be an action comedy.
