Lilo & Stitch 2 confirmed as Disney celebrates 626 day with sequel announcement

Walt Disney Studios has formally declared that Lilo & Stitch 2 is currently in development in honour of "626 Day," a worldwide observance of Stitch, the endearing mischievous character from Lilo & Stitch.

To the delight of fans, the thrilling news was unveiled in a light-hearted promotional video that showed Stitch (also known as Experiment 626) wreaking his signature mayhem throughout the Disney Studios lot.

The upcoming movie will be a follow-up to the popular live-action version of the beloved animated classic from 2002.

Sydney Elizebeth Agudong played Lilo's older sister Nani, and Maia Kealoha played the lively Lilo in the first live-action Lilo & Stitch, which was directed by Dean Fleischer Camp.

When it was released, the movie surpassed box office projections and immediately broke records, becoming the highest-grossing four-day Memorial Day weekend opening in American history.

The remake also garnered significant praise from audiences, earning an impressive “A” rating on CinemaScore. Since its release, it has gone on to collect an estimated $923 million at the global box office, solidifying its place as one of Disney’s most commercially successful live-action reimaginings.

Reflecting on the project’s overwhelming success, Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, commented, “The love that people have for Lilo & Stitch continues to grow, and the goal with this new retelling was for audiences to be able to enjoy these characters on the big screen again and hopefully have just as much fun watching it as we had making it.”

Meanwhile, David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, highlighted the enduring legacy of Stitch, saying, “Stitch is an example of what Disney actually does best.” He added, “An extraordinary animated film from 2002 that becomes a series that then over time creates a real fanship, which leads to us looking at the idea of creating this wonderful film that we now are bringing out to the world.”

Fans of all ages can anticipate another endearing journey that honours friendship, family, and a little bit of interstellar mischief with Lilo & Stitch 2, which is now officially on the horizon.
