The film earned an impressive Rs 165 crore globally during its opening weekend, surpassing the previous record held by Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which had earned Rs 160 crore.

Director-actor Prithviraj Sukumaran's much-awaited L2: Empuraan has set a new benchmark at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film opening of 2025, beating Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava which released in February 2025.

Empuraan has crossed the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide on its fifth day, benefiting from the Eid holiday. It has become the second Malayalam film ever, after Manjummel Boys (Rs 241 crore gross), to reach this milestone, and it achieved this feat at the fastest pace.

The film earned an impressive Rs 165 crore globally during its opening weekend, surpassing the previous record held by Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which had earned Rs 160 crore.

The film’s success has been particularly remarkable in international markets, with the United States contributing Rs 18 crore to its total earnings, underscoring the global anticipation surrounding this sequel to the 2019 hit Lucifer.

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, L2: Empuraan has now surpassed Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which previously held the record with a global earnings of US $19.1 million.

The film reached this achievement with an impressive overseas total of US $17.3 million, including a notable US $2.2 million from the U.S. box office alone. In India, the film made nearly Rs 60 crore within its first four days of release.

Both fans and critics are lauding Prithviraj's directorial vision, as the film solidifies its place as one of the biggest cinematic events of 2025.

While Chhaava, a historical epic on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, had a solid opening earlier this year, L2: Empuraan has now outperformed it, leveraging the massive fanbase built by its prequel’s cult following. L2 Empuraan is the sequel to 2019 Malayalam film Lucifer, which also marked the directorial debut of Prithviraj and starred Mohanlal as the lead.
