Kusha Kapila is an actor and internet personality who has recently drawn attention for both her work and her remarkable physical makeover.
In an era when discussions about celebrity weight loss frequently centre on quick fixes like Ozempic or crash diets, Kusha has decided to speak up and share the true tale of her journey.
Kusha revealed the emotional and physical toll her weight loss journey has taken in a very personal video that she posted on her YouTube channel. The video included details about a serious health scare, body image issues, and childhood trauma.
“For the past month, I’ve been seeing so many transformation reels of myself that I started feeling like I wasn’t even in my body," she said, referencing the countless viral videos highlighting her new look. She described the experience as “a constant out-of-body experience," adding, “someone else was talking about my body more than I was."
Having gone from being dubbed “an average girl” to being hailed as a “goddess of beauty” in media alerts and online posts, Kusha reflected on how external validation and internal battles often intersect. “They would write things like ‘Average girl turned into a goddess of beauty.’”
This, however, wasn’t her first attempt at losing weight. Kusha revealed that her struggle with weight began in childhood. “I started gaining weight when I was 10,” she said, recalling the cruel nicknames like ‘motu’ she was subjected to. Her first significant transformation came at around age 13, when her mother enrolled her in a gym, which she compared to an “akhada.” She ended up shedding around 20-22 kilos but not without long-lasting mental scars.
“At 15 or 16, I was becoming beautiful, but I didn’t realise how deep my body image issues had gone,” she reflected.
While she later found acceptance in her comic identity, the struggle resurfaced in her early twenties. Kusha described a period of low self-esteem and unhealthy habits. “I was consuming only 800-900 calories a day, sometimes even less," she admitted. Though the rapid weight loss drew compliments, Kusha said plainly, “I was starving.”
This unsustainable lifestyle soon took a toll on her health. After experiencing persistent evening fevers, doctors eventually diagnosed her with abdominal tuberculosis—a result of compromised immunity. “Women over 25-26 are more prone to TB,” she explained. “I was diagnosed because I had dropped my immunity so drastically.”
Now 33, Kusha says she’s finally approaching her health from a place of self-love. “For the first time in my life, I felt like I wanted to lose weight for myself,” she said. “Take care of yourself, because no one else is coming.”
On the work front, Kusha is set to appear next in the upcoming season of Maamla Legal Hai.
