Honey Singh responds to misogyny allegations: 'Sirf main hi kyun galat hoon'

Referring to older tracks like Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai, Honey noted that they were once embraced, but today he alone is criticized, while others are hailed as legends. "Why does only Honey Singh get cursed while others are called legends? I call them legends too," he remarked.

Indian rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh recently addressed long-standing allegations of creating misogynistic and objectionable songs.

In an interview with the TOI, the rapper questioned why he is singled out while other prominent lyricists who have written similar lyrics are not held accountable.

Citing veteran lyricist Gulzar’s iconic song “Beedi Jalaile,” he questioned, “Jigar kahan hota hai aurat ka? This is misogynistic for me. ‘Zuban pe laga namak ishq ka,’ why is he talking about the tongue of a woman?” Honey emphasized that he grew up listening to such lyrics but is now being unfairly targeted. “Why am I the only one called wrong?”

Honey, a key figure in revolutionizing Punjabi music and making it a staple in Bollywood, expressed frustration over being made an "easy target."

He acknowledged that while he previously chose not to respond to these allegations, this silence has only made him a more frequent subject of criticism.

When specifically asked about his lyrics objectifying women, Honey defended himself, stating, "It doesn't work like that." He pointed out that similar songs from earlier eras were widely accepted, yet today, he faces backlash.

Referring to older tracks like Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai, Honey noted that they were once embraced, but today he alone is criticized, while others are hailed as legends. "Par Honey Singh ko hi kyun gaali di jaati hai aur unko aap legend bolte ho? Main bhi bolta hoon. Hum dual personalities leke chal rahe hain aaj ke daur mein. Modernise bhi ho rahe hain par backward bhi soch rahe hain,," he remarked.

Honey explained that people are simultaneously becoming more modern while holding onto outdated mindsets.

At 41, Honey asserted that this duality is a reflection of today’s contradictory times, and he refuses to remain silent about the unjust criticism he faces any longer.
