With just one episode left in Stranger Things Season 5, fans are on edge about who will survive the final showdown in the Upside Down. As the Netflix phenomenon inches toward its conclusion, excitement has peaked around the fate of the show’s core characters, especially Steve Harrington, who has narrowly escaped death more times than viewers can count.
So far, the final season has resisted major casualties. While several characters came dangerously close, Nancy and Jonathan trapped in a room filled with unsettling goo, and Steve and Dustin sealing their emotional “you die, I die” pact, no central character has actually been killed. That restraint has only fueled speculation about whether the finale will unleash a devastating twist.
According to creators Matt and Ross Duffer, fans may want to temper expectations of a massacre. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Duffer addressed the growing concern head-on. “It’s not Game of Thrones. We’re not in Westeros. I love Game of Thrones, but it’s just a very different type of show than that. There’s not going to be a Red Wedding situation,” he said.
While that may come as a relief to invested viewers, the Duffer brothers were careful not to promise a completely safe ending. Matt added, “I think some things happen in the finale that are very surprising, but we’re not trying to shock or upset anyone. I hope by the time people get to the end of the finale that it just feels like there’s something inevitable about what happens, and that it doesn’t feel painful but feels satisfying. We’ll see.”
The word “inevitable” has particularly caught fans’ attention, sparking theories about whether sacrifices, if not outright deaths, could play a role in wrapping up the story.
Steve Harrington remains at the center of fan concerns. Long regarded as the group’s emotional anchor and physical shield, Steve has endured repeated beatings throughout the series. Addressing speculation around his fate, Matt Duffer admitted, “But as for Steve’s fate. I don’t know. I can’t say. It would be the next logical step. He keeps getting beaten up more and more. The only way we could take it further is death.”
The comment has only intensified fears, even as it stops short of confirming anything. Whether Steve’s arc ends in survival, sacrifice, or something entirely unexpected remains one of the biggest unanswered questions heading into the finale.
For now, all eyes are on December 31, when the series finale of Stranger Things airs at 8 pm ET.
