Jacob Elordi suffers second-degree burns in steam shower, halts Wuthering Heights production: "It tore up my back"

Jacob Elordi revealed he suffered second-degree burns after a freak steam shower accident while filming Wuthering Heights, forcing a temporary halt in production. The actor was hospitalised following the incident, which he recalled while discussing the intense physical demands of playing Heathcliff.

Jacob Elordi is gearing up to star in the upcoming romance, Wuthering Heights. The actor faced some serious burns that halted the filming.

The actor recently recalled how he burned himself in the shower and was rushed to the hospital.

During a recent interview with Esquire, Jacob revealed how production was halted following a terrible accident that left him with second-degree burns and necessitated medical attention.

Jacob claimed that he almost tempted fate when Siën Miller, the makeup artist for the movie, joked that he should try method acting when she was creating the scars from the whips for Heathcliff's back.

Siën told the actor, “If Daniel Day-Lewis were playing Heathcliff, he would have come in with scars.”

Jacob told the outlet, “I said, ‘Well, I’m going to go away and maim myself on the weekend to prove to you that I’m Heathcliff!’ That night I went home, and the house I was staying in had a steam shower: a brass knob that steam came from out of the wall.”

He continued recalling, “The full story is that, when I was doing Frankenstein, I had so much make-up in my fingers and in my feet all the time, and I left it on for the whole shoot because I couldn’t be bothered washing it all off. As Heathcliff, I was covered in mange and dirt, and I thought, ‘I’m not going to do that again, I’m going to clean my feet properly every night and come in to work fresh the next day.’”

He added, “So I went to clean my feet, and I leant back and my back seared into the steam knob and I stood up screaming; it tore up my back. When I went to work on Monday I had a second degree burn.”

Emerald Fennell, the film's director, claimed to have gotten a text informing her that Jacob was admitted to the hospital.

She said: “Obviously I thought, ‘Oh my god, he’s had a car accident,’ and then he was like, ‘He’s burnt his back in the shower.’”

Despite the movie's February 13 release date, pre-sales are already high, suggesting a $30–$35 million domestic opening weekend.

This would make Wuthering Heights the largest box office debut of Jacob's career and the first successful film for co-star Margot Robbie since Barbie in 2023.

In addition to Shazad Latif, Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Charlotte Mellington, and Owen Cooper, Wuthering Heights is co-produced by Margot's LuckyChap Entertainment, which also created the 2023 successes Saltburn and Barbie.
