Did you know THIS Bridgerton Season 4 actress was also Harry Potter's first heartbreak?

Best known as Cho Chang from the Harry Potter universe, Katie Leung sheds all traces of that gentle past in Bridgerton Season 4. As Lady Araminta Gun, she delivers a chilling, commanding performance that pushes the series into darker, more psychologically charged territory.

  • Katie Leung plays Lady Araminta Gun, a complex stepmother in Bridgerton Season 4
  • Her restrained performance adds psychological depth to the show's romance
  • Leung embraces the role, moving beyond her Harry Potter ingénue image

For many viewers, Katie Leung will always be Cho Chang, the shy, gentle Hogwarts student tied to Harry Potter’s first heartbreak. But in Bridgerton Season 4, now streaming, the actor steps into a role that could not be further removed from her wizarding past.

In the new season, Katie Leung plays Lady Araminta Gun, a formidable presence often described as a classic “wicked stepmother”.

Cold, sharp and emotionally manipulative, Araminta is a twice-widowed woman whose influence dominates every space she occupies. Her most charged dynamic is with Sophie Baek, a relationship layered with tension, power imbalance and unspoken resentment.

Through Araminta, Bridgerton leans into darker psychological territory, adding depth to its trademark romance.

What makes Katie Leung’s performance particularly compelling is its restraint. Lady Araminta does not rely on dramatic outbursts or exaggerated cruelty. Instead, her menace lives in clipped sentences, long silences and the emotional distance she maintains from those around her.

Now in her late thirties, Katie Leung’s return to a global hit feels perfectly timed. Since Harry Potter, she has quietly built a varied career across theatre, television and film, often choosing layered, challenging roles rather than chasing constant mainstream attention.

Yet, public perception has struggled to let go of her image. When she auditioned for Bridgerton, she was encouraged to read not only for Araminta but also for Sophie, the young romantic lead.

As per Harper Bazaar she said, “People thought I’d be offended at being asked to play Araminta,” she has said. “And I thought, ‘No – I feel seen, for once!’ I was the ingénue 20 years ago.”

As Lady Araminta, also known as Lady Penwood, Katie Leung brings humanity to a character that could have easily become a caricature.

Watching over her daughters Posy and Rosamund as they enter the ton, Araminta’s decisions are shaped by fear, survival and a world where marriage is everything.

“The beauty of Bridgerton is that all the characters are complex,” Katie Leung explains. “She has a real sense of purpose. The choices she makes come from love and protection.”
