Fawad Khan is finally returning to Indian screens. His much-talked-about film Abir Gulaal, co-starring Vaani Kapoor, has now locked its India release date, September 26.
The film, directed by Aarti S Bagdi, was already rolled out globally on September 12. But the makers, Indian Stories Limited (UK), have now decided to bring it to Indian theatres with a solo release slot.
“Abir Gulaal (Aabeer Gulaal) has released today, that is, September 12, across the globe. The team of Indian Stories Limited (UK) have now made the decision to release the film in India two weeks from now, on September 26. They are confident of the product and feel that the film, which is a simple and sweet love story, has the potential to attract the audience everywhere, including India. Moreover, no other film is scheduled for a release on September 26 and hence, Aabeer Gulaal will enjoy a solo release in the country," a source told Bollywood Hungama.
Boycott Calls After Pahalgam Attack
The timing, however, hasn’t been without controversy. Following the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, that claimed more than 26 lives, some groups called for a boycott of the movie, citing Fawad Khan’s Pakistani roots. Social media saw hashtags trending against the release, with heated debates on whether art should be separated from politics.
Industry insiders, though, suggest the film might still find takers. Fawad Khan, who made a strong impression in Kapoor & Sons and Khoobsurat, continues to have a loyal fanbase in India.
Vaani Kapoor, last seen in Shamshera, brings her own star power to the project. The on-screen pairing has already piqued curiosity.

Abir Gulaal (Aabeer Gulaal) is positioned as a heartfelt romance, set against a backdrop of cultural and emotional complexities. Early overseas reviews describe it as “sincere and soulful,” with Fawad and Vaani’s chemistry singled out for praise.
For now, fans are marking their calendars for September 26. Whether Abir Gulaal (Aabeer Gulaal) manages to overcome the shadow of controversy and shine as a love story.
