Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone is also a mental health advocate and has recently praised the recently released guidelines by the Supreme Court to protect students’ mental health amid rising suicide cases.
The actress has recently taken to her Instagram Story and re-shared a post from The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF) that reads, “The Supreme Court lays down 15 Guidelines to Safeguard Students’ Mental Health amid rising suicides in India.”
While resharing the post, Deepika praised the decision and wrote, “A landmark step for Student Mental Health.”
The guidelines have declared that the schools in India now have to draft mental health policies and train staff, ensuring a supportive environment for students while addressing mental health issues.
The Supreme Court have recently dubbed mental health a part of the basic right to life and dignity under Article 21 on July 29. A bench led by Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta has shared 15 guidelines for mental health.
They have also criticised coaching centres for ignoring students’ mental well-being. The institutions have to follow the guidelines until the proper laws are made.
The SC has asked all schools and colleges to draft a common mental health policy, based on the Ummeed draft, Manodarpan scheme and the National Suicide Prevention Strategy.
The court has also asked institutions with 100 or more students to hire at least one trained counsellor, psychologist or social worker. Meanwhile, the smaller institutions must connect with external mental health experts.
The SC’s latest decision came after a 17-year-old NEET student in Vishakhapatnam died in 2024.
