The Border 2 success meet in Mumbai was meant to celebrate numbers — but it ended up celebrating something far more powerful: memory, emotion and lived experience.

The evening brought together Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Ahan Shetty, Mona Singh, Anya Singh, Medha Rana, Bhushan Kumar, Nidhi Dutta and director Anurag Singh.

There was laughter, applause and the usual exchange of stories from the sets. But when Mona Singh took the microphone, the room grew noticeably quieter.

Varun Dhawan introduced her with warmth, and Mona Singh, visibly nervous yet smiling, began lightly: “Varun, you are a sweetheart. I was about to say 'heartsweet' as my heart is beating so fast (laughs)!”

Reflecting on how she became part of the film, Mona Singh said, “Many times, I feel that we don't choose scripts. The script chooses us. That's exactly what happened to me for Border 2. When I was offered the script, I knew that I had to do this film. I came on board just a week before the shoot.”

But for Mona Singh, Border 2 was never just another project. It carried the weight of personal history. “I was busy somewhere else promoting another show. I realized that I had to match dates as I was keen to do the film, not just because of the script, but also because I am a fauji's daughter. My dad (Jasbir Singh) fought the 1971 war. There's a scene at the beginning of the film where Sunny sir enters the minefield. That's exactly what happened to my father and to many other soldiers. They stepped on the mine. My father lost his foot.”

There was pride in her voice, but also something deeper — the memory of growing up in a household shaped by sacrifice. “Hence, the determination, resilience, fear, anxiety and pain of my character Simi Kaler is something I had lived through because of my dad. The script made it so real and easy to relate to the character. The soldiers go to the borders and their families also stand in full support with them.”

With Happy Patel, Border 2 and Kohrra Season 2 marking a strong phase in her career, Mona Singh is clearly enjoying a professional high.
