The debate around infidelity in relationships has ignited fresh controversy in Bollywood circles after a recent episode of Two Much, hosted by Kajol and Twinkle Khanna, went viral for its casual take on cheating.

The Amazon Prime talk show’s This or That segment, featuring guests Karan Johar and Janhvi Kapoor, spiralled into a full-blown social media storm when a clip of their conversation about emotional and physical infidelity began circulating online.

Amid the uproar, a clip of Gehraiyaan star Deepika Padukone resurfaced on social media, where the actor had earlier shared her nuanced perspective on emotional infidelity. Speaking in a 2022 interview around the release of Gehraiyaan, Deepika said she would be “far more disappointed” by emotional infidelity than physical.

“Relationships are truly based on connections, and when you have lost that connection in itself, then there is no relationship. Sometimes maybe physical attraction is still sort of a passing thing,” she explained. “Not to say that physical infidelity is okay, but I think emotional infidelity is far more hurtful than anything else.”

However, even her old statement reignited debate online. One Redditor commented, “Infidelity is infidelity. Even physical infidelity is a kind of emotional infidelity.” Another added, “Physical infidelity involves emotional infidelity too — it’s both.”

Interestingly, in a much older interview with Simi Garewal, Deepika had taken a firmer stance, saying she would not tolerate either. “In any form, it doesn’t have to be physical. Even mentally not being present isn’t fair to your partner,” she had said.

During the Two Much segment in question, Twinkle and Kajol asked whether emotional cheating was worse than physical cheating. Both hosts and Karan Johar agreed that emotional infidelity was indeed worse, while Janhvi Kapoor held her ground, saying both were equally wrong. “How can one be worse than the other?” Janhvi questioned. Karan then added, “I believe physical infidelity is not a deal breaker,” to which Twinkle responded flippantly, “Raat gayi, baat gayi.” When Janhvi disagreed, Twinkle retorted, “You’re young,” before KJo quipped, “Sometimes… thand lagg jaati hai.”

What was meant as light-hearted banter quickly drew outrage online, with Reddit users accusing the trio of “normalising cheating.”

One comment read, “How pathetic that Twinkle and Kajol have had to tell themselves physical infidelity is ok to deal with their husbands cheating over the years.” Another said, “Respect for Janhvi here. Cheating is cheating. Can’t believe she’s making more sense than these 50+ adults.”
